A large, national health plan sought to directly close gaps in the Statin Use in Persons with Diabetes (SUPD) demographic among its Medicare Advantage (MA) members who have diabetes and elevated cardiovascular risks. This health plan recognized the critical role statins play in preventive care with the added understanding that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one person dies every 33 seconds from cardiovascular disease. Additionally, unhealthy levels of cholesterol increase the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Recent data suggests that ASCVD-related conditions remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally.
